Tel Aviv is known as a bustling metropolis, and as a major cosmopolitan center in the Middle East. It is home to many great restaurants and shopping destinations, as well as a nearly endless list of religious symbols and attractions. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Tel Aviv draws from the cultures of the European and Middle Eastern countries on the Sea as well. As such, it has developed a deep love for art, and it is home to countless galleries and museums that house fantastic work done by international and Israeli artists. Contemporary Galleries

Israel is known for its art gallery scene, and the city of Tel Aviv is no different. The best thing about these many galleries is that they vary widely in the types of art the feature. At the Sommer Contemporary Art Gallery, for example, you’ll find cutting edge works from some of the top international artists, as well as art done by up and coming Israeli talents. Sommer is known for introducing patrons to young, talented local artists, and it has played a vital role in expanding the reach of these artists to galleries worldwide. Art Museums

Tel Avis home to two of Israel’s largest and best art museums. The Museum of Art is Israel’s seminal art museum. It features works from the top artists of the first half of the 1900s, and works that represent may of the major art movements of the time. It is also the site of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which is an exemplary collection of Abstract and Surrealist works. Although not necessarily focused on art, the Eretz Israel Museum is also worth checking out. It chronicles a history of culture in Israel, and also has exhibits dedicated to folklore and archaeology.

Performing Arts

Tel Aviv is also a great place to go for the performing arts. Over half of Israel’s theatres can be found here, and the performing arts thrives amongst the locals. Habima Theatre, on Rotchild Boulevard, is Israel’s national theatre, puts on many modern and classic plays, as well as musicals and traditional Hebrew productions. The Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center is home to the New Israeli Opera, which puts in eight operas a year. Finally, there’s the Philharmonic Orchestra, which has toured the world for more than seventy years.
