Beaches in Tel Aviv

Jan 15 , 2011

Hit the beaches in Tel Aviv for some fun and relaxation along the Mediterranean Sea!

For all of its restaurants, art, and shopping, perhaps the greatest thing about visiting Tel Aviv is how close it is to the beach. Conveniently located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the entire western part of Tel Aviv is a beach! Along the sandy shoreline, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to take in the sand and sun, as well as great places to eat and shop. No visit to Israel would be complete without spending some time on the beaches in Tel Aviv, so make sure you check out some of the ones we’ve picked out as the best.

Surfing

If you’d like to do some surfing, we recommend that you head to Hilton Beach. Israel’s coastline certainly isn’t known for its surf spots, but this beach has a small reef just off the shore that generates impressive waves. Rent a board and take a lesson, and you’ll come away from your trip with an experience that few other travelers can claim. Hilton Beach also has a section that allows dogs, making it the only beach in Tel Aviv to do so. This is a great place to go if you happen to find yourself in Tel Aviv with your dog, but that’s fairly unlikely, and you’ll probably want to pass on this part otherwise.

Popular Beaches

The most popular beaches in Tel Aviv are the Gordon and Frishman Beaches. They are in close proximity to the most popular hotels, so they are often packed with tourists. Traveler tip: if you can, come to these beaches during the week – they’ll be at their cleanest, and they’re much less crowded. If you do come on the weekend, you can still expect to find very clean and comfortable beaches to lounge upon. For some physical activity, play some volleyball at Gordon Beach, or on the beach playground at Frishman.

Private Beaches

Most of Tel Aviv’s beaches are free, but a few require an access fee. The perks about these are that they are less crowded, and they have higher quality facilities. For just a few dollars, you’ll gain access to these exclusive-feeling beaches that offer a great respite from the bustle of the city. Tel Baruch Beach, near Dov Airport, features a promenade and comfortable seating, and is a favorite of families. Come here expecting to find parents and kids, especially of Tel Aviv’s wealthier families. Nearby is Hatzok Beach, which is equally as popular with families. This beach’s crowd skews slightly younger, so expect to see more babies than teenagers Nonresidents must pay the entrance fee, which means it can become crowded with locals enjoying the well cared for beach.

The beaches in Tel Aviv provide great ways to spend an afternoon, whether you’re here on business or vacation.
