Nightlife in Tel Aviv
Jan 15 , 2011
When the sun goes down, the nightlife in Tel Aviv begins! Learn about the different bars and clubs available to visitors.
During the day, Tel Aviv is a busy metropolis and financial center, home to many cultural attractions, restaurants, and interesting places to shop. Most travelers come with this perception in mind, and they plan on soaking in some of Tel Aviv’s high culture, like the beautiful cobblestone streets of Old Jaffa, or the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora on the Tel Aviv University campus. As the sun goes down, however, things change, and nightlife in Tel Aviv begins.
"The City that Never Stops"
Tel Aviv is often called “the city that never stops,” and while many cities and locations have nicknames that we don’t always agree with, in this case the moniker is completely accurate, in part because of the active nightlife in Tel Aviv. At all hours, people are out and about, and the city is still buzzing. Many restaurants stay open well past midnight, encouraging visitors and city dwellers to eat late and get an even later start to the night’s fun. Partygoers don’t begin heading toward the clubs until 11 pm, and most bars don’t really get going until after 2 am. The bar scene here is very popular, and nightlife in Tel Aviv might be the focus of your favorite memories, or one of the reasons you come back.
Bars Near the Water
There are a few primary places in Tel Aviv to go to the bars, and the most popular places are in the city’s rebuilt port area, located by the sea. If you come in the summer, stop by Rivendell, which is very open and breezy. It’s popular with the younger crowds, and is a place to be seen. For great views of the water, head to Shalvata, which is a partially enclosed pub. Many locals tend to steer clear of the food (you should too), but the scenery and relaxed atmosphere make a great alternative nightlife in Tel Aviv option to the more crowded bars of the city. One example of these more crowded locations is Erlich, where patrons pack tightly around its circle-shaped bar. If you’d like to mix it up with some of the locals, this is definitely the place to do it.
Sports Bars
The most frequently patronized bar amongst travelers looking for a taste of nightlife in Tel Aviv is M.a.s.h. It can be found in Dizengoff area, and it emulates a classic sports bar scene, complete with many big screen TVs. In addition to tourists, it is very popular amongst local older men. There are other great places to go in Dizengoff as well, including Eckman. It is considered one of Tel Aviv’s highest quality bars, and it features a different DJ every night.
The Nightlife Hotspot
The sprawl on Lilenblum Street is the current hotspot for nightlife in Tel Aviv. Many come here for marathon bar crawls, and the best place to start is Nanutchka. The food here is remarkably good, and you can order a number of drinks exclusive to Israel that you won’t find elsewhere.
